Best Actor in a Television Series

Actor Righard Thomas

Richard Thomas is a highly respected actor who inspires audiences with his versatility. He has just completed his sixth season hosting It’s A Miracle as well as starring in the new television series, Just Cause. He recently starred in Edward Albee’s, Tiny Alice off Broadway and was nominated for the 2001 CFT Excellence Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Miracle of the Cards. Mr. Thomas worked on two movie projects in 2002, Anna’s Dream and Beyond the Prairie.

Thomas became a professional actor at age seven, stepping onto the Broadway stage as a young Franklin D. Roosevelt in “Sunrise at Campobello.” His feature film debut came at 16 in Universal Studio’s Winning.

Cast as television’s sensitive John-boy, Richard stole America’s heart on the The Waltons. This role won him a Best Actor Emmy at age 20 along with a Motion Picture and TV/Radio Daily award as the most promising new star of the 1973 season.

While consistently aligning himself with quality projects, Thomas has explored a variety of roles. He was nominated for a Cable Ace Award for the USA Network film “Linda.” When he starred with Maureen O’Hara in “The Christmas Box.” He also co-produced the CBS movie “What Love Sees” and co-starred in the film with Annabeth Gish. Mr. Thomas was seen recently on the big screen in the Pramount Pictures release, “Wonder Boys.”

For the telefilm “I Can Make You Love Me,” Thomas portrayed the obsessed, psychotic Richard Farley, based on a true-life stalking incident. He also co-produced and starred in “Living Proof: The Hank Williams Story.” Other early work includes the television productions of “The Red Badge of Courage,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Berlin Tunnel 21,” “Johnny Belinda,” “Go Toward The Light,” Alex Haley’s “Roots: The Next Generation” and HBO’s “Glory! Glory!” Appearing in over 40 acclaimed television movies, his most recent endeavors include “Beyond The Prairie: The True Story of Laura Ingalls,” “In The Name of the People,” “Down and Out and Dangerous,” “A Thousand Men and a Baby,” “A River’s Rampage,” three Walton reunions (“A Walton Thanksgiving,” “A Walton Wedding” and “A Walton Easter”), “Andre’s Mother,” Stephen King’s “It,” “Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus,” “Crash Landing: The Rescue of Flight 232” and “Mission of the Shark: The U.S.S. Indianapolis.”

Recent guest star roles include “Law & Order: SVU,” “The Practice,” the 1997-98 two-part season premiere of “Touched By An Angel” and “Promised Land.” Thomas has also starred in the series “The Adventures of the Swiss Family Robinson.”

Away from Hollywood, Mr. Thomas is a critically acclaimed star of the theater. He played the lead in “Richard II” and “Richard III” produced by the Stratford Shakespeare Theatre at Connecticut’s Hartford Stage. An early career performance of “Peer Gynt” on the Hartford stage prompted a New York Times reviewer to write, “His flawless performance in this most challenging role further validates his position as one of America's leading classical actors.”

Richard Thomas has appeared on the Broadway stage, at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles, the Hartford Stage in Connecticut, New York’s Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and other world-renowned houses. Theatrical highlights include the New York world premiere of Steve Tesich’s “Square One” with Dianne Wiest, and “The Seagull.” As for the London stage, Mr. Thomas recently appeared in an acclaimed production of “Art.”

Richard has published two volumes of his poetry. The actor lectures at universities on behalf of the Kennedy Center’s Educational Program, serves as the National Chairman of the Better Hearing Institute and on the board of The Morris Animal Foundation. Honored with a Doctor of Fine Arts from the University of South Carolina, he was further honored by serving as the host of the University’s Ecumenical Service of the Family and introducing His Holiness Pope John Paul II.

Richard Thomas is the proud father of triplet daughters, two sons and two step children. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Georgiana and their children.
