Akosua Busia

Best Actress
in a Motion Picture 2003

CFT Excellence Award for Best Actress

Akosua Busia is best known as Nettie in The Color Purple, however, her moving portrayal of Patience, a young Christian woman in Tears of the Sun was absolutely brilliant.

Since her birth into the Royal House of Wenchi in Ghana, West Africa, Akosua Busia has been fulfilling a life destined for greatness. This multi-talented artist is the youngest daughter of an Ashanti Chief and former Prime Minister of Ghana, the Honorable Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia, and Mrs. Naa Morkor Busia. Akosua grew up in Ghana and attended the prestigious Central School of Drama and Speech in London. She graduated early and went on to star in projects for the stage and screen throughout Europe. After being dubbed one of Europe's "Ten Most Promising Stars," Akosua turned her thoughts to America.

Not only a promising actress, Akosua Busia wrote the screenplay of Jonathan Demme's film adaptation of Toni Morrison's
Beloved. Her first novel, The Seasons of Beento Blackbird is one of the most talked about debuts from a young author. The story of an African-American teacher and writer who divides his life by the seasons in Africa, the Caribbean and America, The Seasons of Beento Blackbird delves into the changing nature of racial and cultural identity in America and abroad and is already in development as a major motion picture.
